2017 Sonoma Complex Fires: Story Map

Over 87,000 acres of Sonoma County’s lands burned in the 2017 Sonoma Complex Fire, with more than 25% of the total area on public or protected open space lands.  Most natural lands are recovering well, exhibiting the ability to survive and thrive in our fire-adapted landscape. The following pages tell the story of the 2017 fires, with a specific emphasis on how natural habitats fared during and after the fires, and the important role of science and data in enhancing watershed and community resiliency, land management, and education.
