Recently burned in the 2016 Clark Fire, Indiana Summit Research Natural Area (RNA) provides an excellent opportunity to observe fire effects in an unharvested forest in the Sierra Nevada. Indiana Summit is valued for its pristine Jeffrey pine stands and archaeological importance. The Pauite tribe historically harvested piagi (Pandora moth larvae) from bases of trees creating piagi trenches and the re-creation of these trenches is part of the current management partnership between the tribe and the US Forest Service. This field trip will discuss the interactions of forest structure, traditional knowledge, current management and fire effects. Please join us to learn more about this unique and beautiful area.
