As wildfire regimes and the biosphere’s interactions with wildfire continue to change, a comprehensive, integrative, and strategic approach is needed to understand and predict the causes and consequences of future wildfires. Know Innovation, supported by the National Science Foundation, is hosting a Wildfire and the Biosphere Innovation Lab to generate creative strategies and new research collaborations aimed at improving understanding of different types of fires across temporal and spatial scales, predicting feedbacks between wildfire and living systems, and improving the representation of biological processes in models.
The 5-day virtual Innovation Lab will take place May 17-19, May 21, and May 26, 2021. PI-level researchers-- biologists (molecular to global scale), engineers, Earth scientists, physical scientists, social scientists, and computer scientists-- are strongly encouraged to apply before the deadline of March 1 (lab application).
The Wildfire and the Biosphere Innovation Lab will bring together experts from a wide variety of fields to ideate and refine a strategic framework, to envision new projects related to wildfire and the biosphere, and to develop new research collaborations. Participants will also contribute to a white paper that will shape the direction of this developing research area. Applicants (~100) who demonstrate a collaborative spirit and represent a variety of different scientific disciplines, backgrounds and approaches will be selected to participate. At the end of the lab, participants will have formed new collaborations around innovative ideas. Opportunities for submission of project proposals across NSF will be highlighted. Applicants must be willing to commit to active engagement for the entire duration of the Innovation Lab.

Whether or not you are attending the Town Hall or applying for the Innovation Lab, we know this is an incredibly active area of research and we want to make sure that is captured and that your science is represented. Therefore, we are conducting an online community survey prior to the Innovation Lab. You can find more information on the website https://apply.hub.ki/wildfire/. Responses will be accepted until March 31, 2021. It is very short and anonymous, and the responses will be used to inform discussion at the Innovation Lab.
