The seminar will cover Soils and Landscape Evolution of the Mojave-Sonoran Deserts and will feature extensive work of soil ecologist Joe McAuliffe of the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. This group has performed unraveling soil-geomorphic-vegetation relationships across the Southwest.  Topics such as how soil geomorphology influences shrub die off and responses to drought will also be discussed.  

Dr. McAuliffe's work is considered landmark to our current understanding of long-term evolution of desert landforms and landscape patterns in the Southwest.  

Directions:

The seminar will be held on April 20, from 1-2pm, in the White Hall Auditorium on the northern part of the UNLV campus.  For visitors not familiar with UNLV, please plan on arriving early (ideally avoiding a 12:45 mass exodus of students when classes at that time end, and mass arrival before 1pm when the next class time starts).  White Hall Auditorium is the eastern part of the Biology Building and is off of Cottage Grove Road, just southwest of the intersection of Maryland/Flamingo Rd.  Parking is at a premium; some is available on the north side of the biology building, and there is also some in a parking garage to the northeast.  Federal and other government rigs seem not to be ticketed; there is also metered parking in those locations.  The event is free and agency personnel are welcomed and encouraged.
